Dark Steppe

Dark Steppe

Cross the black mist as a shadow steppe warrior; fight nine kinds of foes and bring down the Dark Khan.

Action · 1 player

How to play

The Black Mist fell on the steppe in a single night: it swallowed the camps and turned people into shadows with nothing left but a red flame in their eyes. Behind the mist sits the Dark Khan, who stole the fire of every hearth to warm his own throne. When the last hearth of his camp goes out, the young warrior Alpagu takes up sword and bow. Four regions, eight levels, from the Ash Steppe to the Dead Forest, the Frozen Pass and the Black Fortress: jump, dash, swing, shoot, relight the dead hearths and bring the stolen fire home.

  1. 1Run left and right and jump; you can jump once more in mid-air.
  2. 2Swing your sword three times in a row: the third strike is the hardest and breaks shields. Shoot arrows from afar; arrows are limited, so pick up bundles.
  3. 3Dashing makes you untouchable for a moment: you can pass through attacks, arrows and ground waves.
  4. 4Touch a dead hearth on the way: it lights up, refills your health and you restart there if you fall. There is a hearth near each boss too: if you fall there, the boss does not start over.
  5. 5Collect spirit flames. Finish the level, collect most flames and never fall: three stars.
  6. 6Hit the shield bearer from behind or with the third strike, and the mist wraith only while it is visible. The Cyclops and the Dark Khan wait at the end.

About Dark Steppe

Dark Steppe is a side-scrolling action platformer that wraps steppe folklore in stark silhouette art. Alpagu's shadowy figure with its red eyes stands out against fog-covered slopes almost purely through motion, and that minimal look keeps every jump and sword swing easy to read. The story is short and direct; most of it lives in the road itself, the cold hearths and the creatures crawling out of the mist.

Eight stages across four regions are arranged so that each one introduces a new obstacle or enemy behaviour. The three-hit sword chain, a limited quiver of arrows and a dash that briefly makes you untouchable are three tools that cover each other's gaps. Working out which tool fits which foe is the puzzle hidden inside the action.

Aiming for three stars on every stage gives you a reason to run a level again more cleanly. Newcomers to platformers rarely lose much ground thanks to the hearth checkpoints, while seasoned players chase flawless runs that collect most of the spirit flames.

Strategy and tips

  • Before charging into a crowded stretch, loose a few arrows to soften the most dangerous enemy from range. Arrow bundles show up often, but do not waste shots.
  • Do not trade blows with a shield bearer from the front. Either vault over and strike from behind, or finish the combo so the third heavy swing smashes the shield.
  • The mist wraith cannot be hurt while it is invisible. Keep your distance, wait for the short window when it appears, then punish it with an arrow or a quick sword chain.
  • Dash is not only an escape button. Use it to pass straight through an attack and land behind the enemy; ground waves and arrows cannot touch you during it.
  • Light every dormant hearth you see. It refills your health and becomes your respawn point, and the one beside each boss keeps failed attempts cheap.
  • Save your double jump for the peak of the first one. You will reach farther and still have room to correct your landing mid-air.
  • On wooden ledges, pressing down together with jump drops you to the floor below, which is the fastest way to slip out from under an attack.

Frequently asked questions

How many stages are there?
Eight, spread across the Ash Steppe, the Dead Forest, the Frozen Pass and the Black Fortress. Length varies by player; anyone chasing every star will revisit stages several times.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Unlocked stages and earned stars are kept in your browser, so coming back on the same browser picks up where you left off.
If I die to a boss, do I restart the fight?
No. You return at the hearth next to the arena, and the boss only recovers part of its health rather than all of it, so each attempt builds on the previous one.
Is it hard?
The hero has six hearts and a short invulnerability window after each hit. Careful players will reach the end; the real challenge is earning three stars everywhere.
