Minefield

Minefield

Read the numbers, flag the mines, clear the field without a blast.

Puzzle · 1 player

How to play

Mines are hidden under the field. Every square you open tells you how many mines are in the eight squares around it. Use these clues to find the mines, flag them and open every other square. The first square you open is never a mine.

  1. 1Click or tap a square to open it; the number shows how many mines touch it.
  2. 2Flag the squares you are sure hide a mine.
  3. 3Click a number whose flags are complete to open all its remaining neighbours at once.
  4. 4Open every square without a mine to win; your best time is kept on this device.

Keyboard

Left click opens a square, right click places a flag, clicking a number whose flags are complete opens its neighbours. Move with the arrow keys, space or Enter opens, F flags, R restarts, Z zooms. On large boards the mouse wheel zooms and dragging moves the board. Esc pauses.

Touch screen

Tap to open a square, press and hold to place a flag. You can also switch to flag mode with the button below. On large boards pinch to zoom and drag with one finger to move.

Controller

On a controller, the D-pad or left stick moves between squares, A opens a square and X places a flag. Y zooms in, and Start pauses.

About Minefield

Minefield is a classic logic puzzle that looks like luck but actually runs on pure deduction. Every revealed number is a small clue, and when you read two or three of them together it usually becomes certain which squares are safe and which hide danger. The fun lies in watching one chain of reasoning suddenly open a whole region of the field.

There are three difficulty levels. Easy hides 8 mines on a 9×9 field and is perfect for learning the rules. Medium turns into a real test with 32 mines on 16×16. Hard asks for long, focused attention with 99 mines spread over 16×30; on a phone this large field is comfortable to play by pinching to zoom and dragging to pan.

For each difficulty the game keeps your best time, how many rounds you played and won, and your longest winning streak. That lets you aim not only to finish a field but to shave your own time down bit by bit. It suits anyone who likes calm, careful thinking or wants a short mental workout.

Strategy and tips

  • Make your first click near the middle of the field. The first square is always safe, so it often opens a wide empty area full of numbers to read.
  • Look for the easy certainties first: a 1 trapped in a corner, or a number with exactly as many closed neighbours as its value, tells you directly where the mines are.
  • Learn the 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 patterns. When you see 1-2-1 along an edge, the mines sit opposite the two outer 1s and the square facing the 2 is safe.
  • Flag only squares you are certain about, then click numbers whose flags are complete; that clears their surroundings far faster than opening cells one at a time.
  • When stuck, think about numbers in pairs rather than alone. Subtract the squares two neighbouring numbers share, and the difference often reveals a new certainty.
  • If a real guess becomes unavoidable, check the remaining mine count and pick a square from a large closed area with no information; your odds there are usually better than in a cell squeezed between numbers.
  • To improve your time, try skipping flags entirely. Winning only requires opening every safe square.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hit a mine on my first click?
No. The first square you open is never a mine; mines are placed in a way that keeps that guarantee.
When do I win?
The field counts as cleared the moment every non-mine square is open. You do not have to flag all the mines.
Where are my statistics kept?
Best time, win rate and winning streak are stored separately for each difficulty on your device and shown under that difficulty in the menu.
Is Hard playable on a phone?
Yes. When the field does not fit the screen you can pinch to zoom and pan with one finger; a long press places a flag and the button at the bottom switches to flag mode.
